A B MacDonald, City Engineer, 1895-7. Former Sanitary
Chambers in cluttered Mannerist style, 3-storey with
4-storey tower feature at angle, office building.
Polished ashlar raised on polished pink granite
basecourse alternating with granite balustrades at
recessed bays, vermicular rustication to ground. Ground
floor windows round arched with Gibbsian surrounds, to
upper floors aedicular with blocked columns or
pilasters, pedimented to 1st.
MONTROSE STREET ELEVATION: 5-bay with end and centre
bays shallow advanced, extreme left bay is tower
feature. Central porch with polished pink granite Doric
columns. Round arched porch doorway with Gibbsian
detail, double leaf panelled doors. Above door canted
window to 1st, 3 windows to 2nd. Tower feature to left,
4-storey advanced with pedimented Venetian windows to
1st and 2nd. 3rd windows tripartite with pilastered
reveals. Parapet with raised die pedestals at angles.
To far right, advanced bay with pend to ground, venetian
windows above.
COCHRANE STREET ELEVATION: long plainer elevation. End
bays advanced, central bays with consoled balustraded
balcony to 1st, other 1st floor windows with balustraded
aprons.
All windows sash and case with 2-pane lower, single pane
upper sashes. Eaves cornice, deep plain parapet. Over
centre bay of Montrose Street elevation, pediment with
urn finials and statue of Hygeia at apex.
