Description

John Ednie, 1907. Asymmetrical arts and crafts villa with baronial details. 2 storeys, attic and basement. Stugged polygonal ashlar walling: dressed quoins, polished margins stonecleaned.

Irregularly placed iron-framed casement windows, mostly with small leaded panes, some with stained glass panels. Projecting bays and windows rest on corbelling or brackets. Bold crowstep gables with skewputts, steeply pitched slate roofs, tall stacks.

W ELEVATION: bold gabled bay to left with moulded tripartite doorpiece with horizontally divided "stable" door, leaded sidelights. Above, decorative carved panels between corbels supporting projecting bay. To right; 2-storey bay with 4-light window to ground; at 1st pedimented dormers break line of eaves.

Other elevations similarly handled with bold use of corbelling. Single-storey gabled service wing to rear.

INTERIOR: high quality with much original panelling and plasterwork. Depressed arch roll-moulded fireplaces to ground floor, linen wallpaper. Mackintosh-style screened staircase. Bathroom with original shower attachment. Very good decorative stained glass to hall and tripartite vestibule door, by Oscar Paterson.

Statement of Interest

Ednie (1876-1934) trained with Scott Morton and Co and John Kinross RSA in Edinburgh and 11 Whittinghame Drive borrows strongly from the work of Lorimer and Kinross.
