Late 18th century in origin with 19th century additions and alterations. Small group of 3 gabled corn mill buildings, sited on falling ground and aligned in a rectangular plan on roadside with conduit to N. Rubble whinstone wih granite dressings, whitewashed; shlar coping.
Earliest and tallest block to N (threshing barn); 2-storey with former whell to N gable, position indicated by ashlar masonry. Sliding machinery door to W elevation, flanked by windows. Door to upper floor (grain store?) on E elevation, entered from bank.
Centre section single storey with loft; door to far left and machinery door to right in W elevation; later, brick gabled loft door on E elevation.
Single storey cottage (in poor condition 1991) adjoined to S with door to left and window to right on W elevation and futher door on S return; blank at rear.
INTERIOR: not seen (1991).
Grey graded slates. Skylights to centre block and cottage. Ashlar ridge tiles and ventilators. Small, coped single stack to cottage.
A plaque attached to the W roadside elevation, centre block, reads "Home of James Faed - millwright and Mary McGeoch, his wife. Birthplace of John Faed, engraver, Susan Walthew or Faed, artist. Erected by The Galloway Association of Glasgow 1982." Barlay Mill is marked on Ainslie's Map of 1797.
