Description

Peter Fulton, architect, Forres, dated 1900. 3-storey and

attic, 3-bay frontage to High Street with curved angle bay to

corner of High Street/Caroline Street with entrance.

Bullfaced rubble, tooled ashlar dressings, harled W gable. 2

shop fronts in ground floor. Canted oriel windows in 1st

floor outer bays with wallhead balconies fronting substantial

4-light mullioned round-headed windows in 2nd floor. Similar fenestration in angled bay but with tripartite in 2nd floor.

2 shaped finialled gablets to High Street frontage supported

by large scroll brackets; 2-pane glazing. Finialled leaded

dome crowns angle wallhead; end stacks; slate roof. Modern

shop fronts to 2 shops in ground floor, High Street frontage.

Statement of Interest

Carlton Hotel constructed on site of former Plough Inn,

subsequently named The Plough Inn. This was the name of the

1900 hotel until 1930 when it was re-named The Carlton Hotel.
