Sydney Mitchell, 1888. 12' high hexagonal base raised on
3 steps in the style of that destroyed about 1650.
Ashlar, fluted pilasters at each angle with Ionic capitals
and gargoyles; shell-headed niches with seats to 5 faces
and entrance to platform in 6th; tall parapet with
panelled pilasters and St Giles emblem to E face; 12'
high granite shaft supporting lion rampant with shield.
Present cross replaces that erected during reign of Charles I
and destroyed 1782. Gifted by a native of Elgin, William
McAndrew of Little Horkesley, Essex.
