Description

Early 19th century. Ashlar walls of coursed stone diminishing in size towards coping and with slight batter effect, keel-shaped coping. Clair voyee iron railings to E end at corner with Quality Street. Wall span broken and flanks lowered in creation of opening for modern housing development. Breached for bus shelters at 2 intervals, a 3rd shelter placed within former gateway with monolithic piers. Further original gateway to S lodge (NT 1888 7493) at W with quadrant walls.

Statement of Interest

The walls originally defined the policies of Barnton House, and presumably date from the time when the Ramsays gained the benefit to have Queensferry Road realigned to the south of its original position. Barnton House has been demolished. The two map references given here indicate the extent of the wall covered by the listing from W to E. Walls taper to far W, lower in form and broken at intervals for access to later housing.
