Description

B N H Orphoot, 1928. 2-storey, near rectangular-plan villa. Textured white render (probably replacing original cement render); swept eaves.

N (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: advanced symmetrical gabled bay offset to right: advanced doorpiece with bipartite windows flanking; splayed doorway; deep-set panelled door; corniced stair window above with single windows flanking; small single window set in gablehead. Irregular size and distribution of windows to left and right of advanced bay. Fixed and casement steel windows with small-pane glazing. Grey pantiled piend-roofed garage detached to E.

INTERIOR: not seen 2001.

Statement of Interest

Designed by Burnet Napier Henderson Orphoot, or 'Phootie', for himself. Dean of Guild elevations of the house show an open loggia to the S, similar to that at No 2 Easter Belmont Road. Easter Belmont Road is a group of large, idiosyncratic villas designed by high profile architects during the 1920s and 1930s including F Deas, B Orphoot, H Tarbolton, M Ochterlony, B Spence and W Kininmonth. The villas are representative of the international styles that influenced British architecture during the inter-war period.
