Late 19th century. Former Caledonian Railway Company girder bridge running N to S, now carrying cycleway over the A8. Cast-iron superstructure and parapet with steel plate girders; stugged and coursed sandstone abutments and wing walls with polished dressings.
METAL BRIDGE STRUCTURE: 3-arched sections of blind arcading, each divided by fluted brackets supporting decorated iron consoles; grilled sections above, with dies at same intervals as consoles; central panel to each side contains pair of lions rampant flanking thistle, rose and shamrock motifs.
STONE SUPPORTING STRUCTURE: wing walls stepped at each side, with pedestalled ball finial to lowest steps; cavetto eaves course along top of abutments; consoles supporting corniced sandstone platform at each corner of bridge; carving (incorporating 'CR', Caledonian Railway cipher) between consoles; low, pilastered wall, of same width as each section of bridge, above platforms; skewed triangular pediment, with carving (as above) to head, to each section of wall.
Similar to (although less elaborately decorated than) the Caledonian Railway Company bridge on Gorgie Road at Tynecastle Lane, the work of Donald Matheson, the Company's chief engineer. Refined, well-finished, stone classical supporting structure in good condition. Metalwork above colourfully painted in blue and green. The bridge was probably rebuilt in the late 19th century when Roseburn Terrace was widened. Murrayfield Station formerly stood to the NE. 2 cast-iron lamp standards remain on the NW embankment.
