Description

Standard Edinburgh police box, by City Architects Department (E J MacRae, City Architect), designed late 1930s. 2-bay rectangular-plan (6ft x 4ft) cast-iron gabled kiosk sited at NE entrance to Rutland Square. Pilastered principal elevations, entrance elevation to NE with corniced door to right bearing city arms; 2 small corniced doors to left. Single bay short elevations surmounted by open pediments containing ribboned wreath decoration. Saltaire patterned glazing to all elevations.

Statement of Interest

Part of the Edinburgh New Town A-Group, a significant surviving part of one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. Reference singles out names of A Rollo and J A Tweedie.
