Description

Formerly dated 1734 with initials CW&M and Clifton Crest.
2-storey and attic 4-window and centre shouldered doorpiece
ground floor (panel above removed) 3-window 1st floor,
1-window centre wallhead gable, scroll skews: later stucco
with margins, slated. Interior bricked up, but contains
panelled entrance hall and good ground floor drawing room
with china niche and secret door, upper part of stair
has turned mahogany balusters, one panelled bedroom.

Statement of Interest

Built by William Clifton, Solicitor of Excise, Leased in

1807 to the engraver Robert Scott (1771-1841); David Scott

RSA (1806-49) brought up here; William Bell Scott HRSA LLD

(1811-90) Pre-Raphaelite artist born here. Sold to Edinburgh

and Dalkeith Railway 1827, became railway office for the

adjoining coalyard. Deserted since 1968, bricked up and

chimneys shortened.
