Mid 19th century. Large, 2-storey and attic L-plan baronial villa with central, polygonal-roofed turret. Polished, coursed sandstone ashlar. Base course; hoodmoulds to windows to advanced gabled bay; skews, skewputts and finials to gables.
S (FRONT) ELEVATION: advanced, gabled bay at left, with canted bay at ground floor; string course and cornice to canted bay; stone balustrade above, with ball finials to dies, forming balcony to bipartite window at 1st floor; narrow light to gablehead; engaged octagonal turret rising to attic level to bay to centre; doorpiece at ground comprising moulded, shouldered surround surmounted by recessed square plaque to panelled timber door with shouldered, rectangular fanlight; narrow light to central face at 1st floor above; urn finial to turret roof; bay to right blank at ground; bracketed platform to bipartite window at 1st floor; blind arrow-slit to gable breaking eaves.
2-pane timber sash and case glazing. Grey slate roof; grey slate fish-scaling to turret roof; shouldered and coped gablehead stacks with tall octagonal cans (some missing); stacks to rear with octagonal and cylindrical cans.
BOUNDARY WALLS: low sandstone boundary wall to street, with obelisk on square-plan pedestal set to right.
Built under Alexander Black, who died in 1858, as part of the Heriot Trust feus. The obelisk gatepiers continue the theme set by Donaldson's Hospital (see separate list description).
