Late 18th century; recast and converted by Ian Lindsay & Partners, circa 1970. 3-storey, 3-bay front to Pier Place. Grey ashlar sandstone to ground floor; rendered and whitewashed to 1st and 2nd floors. Dividing band course between ground and 1st floors; raised and painted concrete surrounds to openings. Tripartite windows in central bay at 1st and 2nd floors. 2-storey, 3-bay harled and limewashed facade to Lamb?s Court; raised and painted concrete surrounds to openings. Exterior stair with timber railings to 1st floor.
N (PIER PLACE) ELEVATION: central entry bay infilled with window; door to left; single windows in bays to outer left and right. Tripartite windows to central bay at 1st and 2nd floors (side lights blinded); single windows to both floors in bays to outer left and right.
S (LAMB?S COURT) ELEVATION: stairs to timber boarded door in central bay at 1st floor (No 1). Single window aligned above; single windows to both floors in bays to outer left.
2-pane timber sash and case windows to both elevations. Machine-made red pantiled roof with grey slate easing course and precast concrete skews. Harled chimneys to E and W with precast concrete copes and circular cans.
B Group with Nos 2-5 Lamb?s Court and Nos 4-8 Wester Close (see separate list entries). Ground floor to Pier Place now a catering outlet, 1st and 2nd floors remain residential. The elevation to Lamb?s Court displays characteristics typical of the Newhaven overhaul by Ian Lindsay & Partners during the 1970s. Note the harled and limewashed walls, red pantiles, standard detailing to the stair and painted cement surrounds to openings. Despite harsh detailing and an element of standardisation, the practice?s work here should be acknowledged as a pioneering attempt to conserve and improve an entire fishing village. Substantial in size and with a clear philosophy, it contrasts with more recent restoration attempts and thus, illustrates the differing and developing attitudes towards conservation. Previously listed as Pier Place 3 and 8 Lamb?s Court Newhaven.
