John Lessels, 1864. 4-storey, 24-bay astylar block of tenements with shops at ground. Polished, channelled sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. Dentilled cornice and blocking course to advanced ground floor; corniced cill course to 3rd floor; cornice and blocking course.
FRONT ELEVATION: timber doors with rectangular fanlights intersperse modern shop fronts at ground; regular fenestration to upper floors.
Predominantly 4-pane timber sash and case glazing; modern glazing to shopfronts. grey slate roof; coped rendered and sandstone ashlar mutual stacks; cast-iron rainwater goods.
Part of New Town A-Group. Opulent interiors were designed for many of the houses. West Maitland Street was part of the Easter Coates estate owned by the Walker Trustees who, along with the Heriot's Trust, owned large tracts of land in the West of Edinburgh.
