Early 18th century. 6-storey and attic, 4-bay tenement block with central pedimented wallhead gable and shop to ground. Roughly squared and coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings. Ornamental timber doorpiece surrounding pend at left, leading to Tweedale Court. Recessed lobby to later shop frontage flanked by plate glass windows. Projecting turnpike stair to rear centre.
12-pane timber sash and case windows. Scottish slate. Broad harled stacks with clay cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.
No 16 High Street is a fine survival of a traditional early 18th century Edinburgh tenement and it is an integral part of the Old Town's rich heritage of residential buildings. Its notably tall and narrow composition and regular fenestration contribute significantly to the character of the streetscape. The High Street is located at the heart of the Old Town and has World Heritage Site status. Historically the central focus of public, civic and commercial life within the city, the High Street contains many of Edinburgh's most distinguished buildings including St Giles Kirk and Parliament Hall (see separate listings). Its special architectural and historic interest as one of Edinburgh's primary medieval thoroughfares is unparalleled.
