Description

Circa 1835. 2-storey and basement; 3-bay; symmetrical, classical villa; L-plan with 2 principal, ashlar, sandstone elevations with pediments; ashlar dressings. Ashlar base course to most parts; eaves cornice; architraved windows to principal elevations: those to 1st floor lugged: those to ground floor aproned and with consoled cornices.

E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: recessed central bay containing entrance hall flanked by pedimented bays; moulded cornices to pediments. Stone steps to central entrance with Doric porch (plain entablature supported by paired pilasters); replacement timber door in early/original glazed timber tripartite surround.

S (FERRY ROAD) ELEVATION: projecting central bay with pediment; canted bay window (probably an addition) to ground floor.

N AND W (REAR) ELEVATIONS: coursed sandstone with ashlar dressings and droved quoins; stairway extension with catslide roof at re-entrant angle; modern, rendered, flat-roofed extensions to either side. Elevations to re-entrant angle largely blank (occupied by flues), apart from extensions and single narrow window at junction with catslide roof.

Mainly 12-pane, lying-pane timber sash and case windows; 2-pane sashes to bay window; border glazed window to stairway extension; replacement windows to basement. Grey slate roofs. 3 ashlar wallhead stacks with moulded cornices; similar ridge stack; all with moulded octagonal cans.

INTERIOR: not inspected 1997.

BOUNDARY WALL: sandstone rubble retaining wall with semicircular coping to S and part of E side.

Statement of Interest

Previously listed as 2 and 2A Granton Road. Unusual double-fronted villa in the style of WH Playfair, retaining most of its original lying-pane glazing.
