Description

1785-90 with later alterations. 3-storey and basement 4-bay former classical house. Droved and broached cream ashlar sandstone. Long and short quoins; cill course at 1st floor; eaves cornice. Outer right bay broader with modern Ionic pilastered pedimented doorpiece containing 2-leaf panelled door with arched fanlight with radiating glazing.

3 corniced bipartite box-dormers. Ashlar stairtower protrudes from roof at E apex.

Timber sash and case windows; 12-pane at ground and 2nd floor, 15-pane at 1st; grey slates.

INTERIOR: not seen 1995.

RAILINGS AND LAMP STANDARDS: cast-iron mid 19th century railings and pair of lamp standards.

Statement of Interest

The doorpiece was originally a corniced tripartite arrangement. Part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. One of the few houses on George Street to have never been extended at ground. A Group with No 93 George Street.
