Circa 1775; later additions. 4-storey and basement 5-bay classical corner block. Droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. Long and short quoins at corner; cill course at 3rd floor; dentilled cornice and balustraded concrete parapet.
GEORGE STREET ELEVATION: 4 left bays with 2 shops built out at ground (incorporating basement) with timber facing; symmetrical 3-bay shop slightly built out to right with consoled cornice and basement shop below.
HANOVER STREET ELEVATION: 4-bay. Steps to corniced common stair door at centre right bay, flanked by early 19th century pilastraded shopfronts.
12-pane timber sash and case windows. Rendered stacks; grey slates.
INTERIOR: much altered at ground; linked with offices to S at upper floors.
RAILINGS: simple cast-iron railings.
4th storey and parapet later addition. The W shop (Waterstons) emerges in Hanover Street at No 66 (see separate listing). Part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. A Group with Nos 33-63 (odd nos) George Street and 68-90 (even nos) Hanover Street.
