1786-92. 3-storey and attics, 9-bay double bow fronted former pair of classical houses with flats above. Ground and 1st floor built out as shops. Polished cream sandstone ashlar. 3 central bays flanked by bows. Projecting shops divided between 4 S and 5 N bays, that to N slightly advanced, with entrance to common stair; modern at ground, original pilastraded 1st floor. Flanking pair of broad early 19th century bow dormers with tripartite windows, and further dormer to centre right; sundry skylights.
Plate glass at ground; at 1st floor, lattice metal glazing to No 16, plate glass casements to No 12; timber sash and case to upper floors, plate glass to S, 12-pane to N; multi-pane to dormers. Ashlar coped skews; rebuilt corniced dressed stone stack to S; rendered to N; grey slates; moulded hoppers.
INTERIORS: shops extended to rear at ground and 1st floors and thoroughly converted to retail use. Upper flats subdivided.
Kirkwood shows rustication at ground and pilastraded arched doorways. A Group with Nos 6-18 (even nos) Frederick Street as a significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
