Description

Thomas Leadbetter, 1889; subsequent alterations. Symmetrical 3-storey and attic, 4-bay French Renaissance terraced office breaking forward from line of street. Moulded architraves. At ground, modern shop and entrance to offices above. At 1st floor, plinth with Doric pilasters between windows; those to outer flanks of central windows broader, bearing elaborate carved crests; cornice. At 2nd floor, individual pedestals with fluted Ionic pilasters (paired to broader piers); shouldered architraves. Eaves cornice with balustraded parapet. Broad slate-hung box dormer to 3 right bays.

Multi-pane timber windows; casements at 1st floor, 20-pane to 2nd floor. Rendered stack to inner left and stone mutual stack to right; grey slates.

INTERIOR: at 1st floor, front room with timber panelling, chimneypiece framed by paired fluted Ionic pilasters and enriched panelled ceiling; rear rooms divided by massive archway (repeated at 2nd floor).

Statement of Interest

Built for the Scottish American Mortgage Company. Building was thoroughly refurbished in 1990. The stair gives access to the upper floors of No 4. Nos 4-8 were originally a symmetrical tenement block.
