Description

John Chesser, 1860-62. 2-storey with attic, 9-bay, classical terrace of 3 houses, continuous in design with Nos 2-24 (Even Nos) East Claremont Street. Sandstone ashlar with architraved margins. Base course with bracketed cills at ground floor, cill band at 1st floor, eaves cornice and parapet. Tall and narrowly proportioned windows, taller at 1st floor.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: timber panelled doors with fanlights in architraved entrances in bays 1, 6 and 9; windows to bays remaining, regular fenestration above, 2 canted dormers to No3, full-width dormers to No5.

Timber sash and case windows with 4-pane glazing, grey slates, ashlar ridge stacks with terracotta cans, cast-iron railings (not continuous).

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

BOUNDARY WALLS: low coped ashlar walls enclosing site

Statement of Interest

On site of unexecuted scheme for mirror of Thomas Bonnar's Bellevue Terrace (see also 7-35 Bellevue Place and 4-11A Bellevue Terrace). Heriot Trust Estate.
