Late 17th century, with later alterations and additions, including Henry Kerr, 1895. 6-storey and attic 5-bay tenement with shop built out at ground floor; flat roofed block to rear. Random rubble with ashlar dressings; flat-roofed 5-storey block to rear harled to ground floor. Regularly fenestrated, small windows to outer left; 3 gabled dormers to attic; bipartites to W elevation of rear block.
INTERIOR: plasterwork from the 1895 alterations, and some of the original mahogany display cases.
12-pane glazing in timber sash and case window. Grey slates.
The tenement formed the W side of Middle Baxter's Close, the E side being demolished in 1798 to make way for Bank Street. Dean of Guild drawings show plans to build out and roof over the new shop front. The arcade with stone piers supporting the front wall of the building still exists, now inside the shop.
Statutory address updated 2009.
No. 451 Lawnmarket is included in this listing but also in 435 and 437-449 Lawnmarket as parts of the building are included in the rear of all three.
