Description

Circa 1780; interior remodelled 2008 by The Burrell Company Ltd. 2-storey, 3-bay, symmetrical detached classical villa with later small single storey wing to left (S). Coursed and squared random rubble with some droved ashlar quoins and painted ashlar surrounds. Corniced eaves course with shallow blocking course over. Main entrance to centre with narrow rectangular fanlight and corniced surround. Deep moulded architraved surrounds to windows at E elevation. 3 small rooflights.

W (REAR) ELEVATION: advanced curved stair tower to left (N) and prominent nepus gable off-centre to right (S). Irregular fenestration.

Predominantly 12-pane in timber sash and case windows. Pitched roof with broad sandstone copes and sandstone ridge; grey slates. Coped rubble gable end stacks; some octagonal clay cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: redeveloped as modern residential dwelling 2008.

Statement of Interest

Mill House is a good example of a large detached Georgian villa forming an important part of the former mill complex. The villa is prominently sited above the Water of Leith and provides a landmark on the Water of Leith Walkway. It is likely to have provided accommodation and offices for the manager of the former Bell's Mills, of which the nearby granary (see separate listing) is the only surviving building. The other buildings were destroyed by an explosion on the site in 1975. The mill occupied a site on the Water of Leith near the Dean Village and in an area occupied by mills since the 1573. The site is one of few surviving examples in the Dean area of its former industrial heritage, particularly based on grain milling, many of which utilised power provided by the Water of Leith. The mills were originally owned by the City of Edinburgh before being sold to the Baxter's Incorporation in 1734-5. The Incorporation rebuilt a number of the mills in the area, including Bell's Mills in 1807.

The house was redeveloped as residential dwellings in the 2008 by The Burrell Company Ltd as part of a wider development of the Bell's Mills site.
