Description

Earlier 19th century. Single storey, 3-bay rectangular-planned symmetrical Gothick house, with later linking wing to right. Polished ashlar. Base course, cornice, blocking course, Tudor hoodmoulds, chamfered arrises and stop-chamfered angles.

SE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: bays flanked by 4 slender Ionic columns supporting raised architrave. Deep-set panelled door at bay to centre; rectangular fanlight above with 6 pointed-arch panes. Windows to flanking bays; window to left of linking wing.

NW (REAR) ELEVATION: not seen, 1994.

Timber sash and case windows, 6-pane to lower half and simple Gothic small-pane pattern to upper; Tudor arched window to linking wing, with timber mullioned Gothic-style casement. Piended grey slate roof with ashlar wallhead stacks to side elevations; flat roof to linking wing.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1994.

BOUNDARY WALLS: ashlar with coping, formerly with railings.

Statement of Interest

This finely detailed Gothick building first appears on Sutter's map of 1856. It is called Waverley Cottage.
