Description

Early 19th century. Single storey, 3-bay, gabled, rectangular-plan smithy with taller half-piend, 2-bay addition to W. Squared and snecked sandstone with dressed quoins and margins. Raised cills.

N (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: bays grouped toward centre, off-centre 2-leaf door with droved margin, flanking 16-pane sash and case windows. Taller bays to W; simple boarded door with 3-pane letterbox fanlight above. Fixed 6-pane window to right.

S AND E ELEVATIONS: blank.

W ELEVATION: 2-bay, undressed window at centre with wooden jambs and lintel, boarded door to right with droved margin.

Slate roof, pitched ridge ventilator.

INTERIOR: heavy wooden boarded floor, exposed roof timbers. Large lean-to brick forge at E end (now operated mechanically), remains of forge at West end.

BOUNDARY WALL: rubble wall with semi-circular coping curves around area of blacksmith's court.

Statement of Interest

The smithy is listed Cat B for interest as one of the few remaining working smithies. The weather-vane on Kirkliston Parish Church was crafted by the present smithy.
