Description

Circa 1821. 4-storey on raised basement 8-bay classical tenement; basement built-out to form raised terrace. Cleaned cream sandstone droved ashlar with polished dressings. Base course; rusticated ground floor with band course above; cill course to 3rd floor; cornice. Regular fenestration. Flat-panelled doors.

Basement with door to left bay; 7 right bays advanced with 5 2-bay shops, each with window and 2-leaf panelled door; ashlar coping supporting spearhead railings; straight flight of steps at left to principal floor terrace. principal floor, 4th bay from left with tenement door with 3-pane rectangular fanlight and blind windows above; main doors to 2nd (3-pane fanlight) and 6th (sunburst fanlight) bays.

Harled gable end to S, formerly adjoining next building.

Rubble rear elevation.

12-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slates; coped ashlar stacks; ashlar coped skews.

Statement of Interest

Forms a unified terrace with 4 Portland Terrace and 6-8 (inclusive) Portland Place (see separate listing). The terrace is continued at 21-2 Portland Place (see separate listing) after cruder later 19th century interruptions. 2 Portland Terrace contains 7 flats.
