Description

Early 19th century, with later 19th century additions and alterations. 2-storey, 3-bay, rectangular-plan, classical villa, now divided. Painted droved ashlar with polished dressings. Base course, cill course at 1st floor, eaves course, dentilled cornice; raised quoins.

NW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: projecting bay to centre, with raised quoins, breaking through eaves, raised panelled tablet at blocking course. Corniced, Roman Doric pilastered doorpiece, fluted lintel with flanking rosettes, with 9-panelled door, plate glass semi-circular fanlight and window in arched recess at 1st floor above. architraved window to each floor, bay to right. Later full-height canted window in bay to left, with moulded string course and panelled angles; round-arched window to centre of canted dormer. Later squared rubble, painted wall with coping, to right, joining to adjacent property (7 John Street), as entrance to rear portion of house.

SE (REAR) ELEVATION: some alterations; 2 modern dormers.

Plate glass timber sash and case windows. Slate roof with coped skews; apex stacks. Piended and platformed canted window in bay to left with cast-iron railing; slate-hung sides to canted dormer.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1994.

BOUNDARY WALL: stugged ashlar with ashlar copings; formerly with cast-iron railings; fine cast-iron post box to left of gate.

Statement of Interest

A building is shown on this site on Wood's map, in 1824. The alterations which were made later last century have altered the character of the house considerably. Permission was sought from the Dean of Guild in May 1907 to subdivided the house into 2 properties. The listing includes GF (ground floor flat), No 9 (1F: 1st floor) and No 9A John Street.
