Late 17, early 18th century; sandstone rubble; round-arched gateway with rock-faced coping to wallhead, flanking rusticated piers with horizontal bands of rock-faced masonry. Banded architrave capped by lions couchants. Quadrant walls flanking.
The gateway is not in its original position and has been re-set in modern rubble walls to Napier University. Merchiston Castle is listed separately under Colinton Road, Merchiston Castle.
