Description

Dated 1754. Pair of single storey, 3-bay, rectangular-plan, symmetrical, gabled cottages. Red sandstone rubble with yellow tooled and squared margins to openings. Overhanging eaves with exposed rafters.

NO 1: SE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION; harled, regular fenestration. Modern, 2-leaf, timber door to centre; lintel above inscribed, 'IW 1754 HW'. Projecting cills to flanking windows. NW (REAR) ELEVATION: blank rubble wall. SW (SIDE) ELEVATION: low rubble, outshot with piended roof. NE (SIDE) ELEVATION: obscured by abutting building.

NO 2: SE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: regular fenestration; 2-leaf, timber, panelled and glazed door to centre. NW (REAR) ELEVATION: blank rubble wall. SW (SIDE) ELEVATION: obscured by abutting building. NE (SIDE) ELEVATION: obscured by abutting building.

8-pane, timber-framed, sash and case windows. Grey slates, lead flashing. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Coped stacks.

INTERIORS: NO 1; not seen 2001. NO 2; small, plain, renovated apartments.

Statement of Interest

These cottage and neighbouring Albert Cottage (see separate listing) were probably tied cottages belonging to the surrounding Cromlix estate, predating the Doune Road villa developments of the mid to late 19th century. Calderwood Place marked the western limit of Dunblane until 1854.
