Early 19th century with alterations including early 20th
century bank front with entrance in N west angle. 2 storeys,
2-bay E gable rises from river level below; a 4 (3 + 1)
bays to Galloway Street, 2 bays to Market Square. Stugged
red ashlar and margins painted except at W gable; bank
built of polished red ashlar (? stone-cleaned) door with
consoled and pedimented hood, 2-bay elevations with
architraved windows and blocked cornice. Elevation to
Galloway Street with enlarged ground floor windows, door
and window in inner bay. Windows mostly sashes, 1 with
original 12-pane glazing pattern. Corniced end stacks;
slate roof, piended at NW.
Occupies prominent position beside Buccleuch Street bridge.
