Earlier 20th century. 2-storey and attic, quadrant-like plan, 17-bay commercial building with shops to ground floor on prominent corner site. Red sandstone ashlar, slate Mansard roof. Corniced ground floor, eaves band, corniced wallhead; 12-pane timber sash and case windows with checked and chamfered margins, plain raised square panels between windows at lintel level, flat-roofed 12-pane dormers.
FRONT ELEVATION: 2-leaf door to right with moulded doorcase set in deeply splayed doorcase with large keystone, small keystoned segmental stair window above, further large 16-pane stair window at 1st floor set in round-headed panel with consoled ashlar balcony, window with mannered lintel to attic of flat-roofed margined stair tower; 8 shopfronts to left, slightly altered but all retaining original elements, 16 windows to 1st floor, 16 dormers.
INTERIOR: terrazzo floor, marble lining and door with sidelights
and round-headed fanlight at entrance hall.
This building is an important townscape feature following the quadrant-like curve from Meadowside into Victoria Road.It was probably the office built for the Ladywell Calender, later used by Brown and Tawse, steel stockholders. The E most shop/public house was once No3 Victoria Road, but is now 85-87 Meadowside.
