Circa 1855, remodelled by Edward and Robertson, 1873,
extended to W by A Hutchinson, 1882. Coursed rubble
commercial buildings in 3 blocks, from E to W:
E BLOCK 3-storey and attic, 5-storey rear due to slope of
land, 4-bays, circa 1855, remodelled 1873. Ground floor
chamfered and corniced shopfront. Upper floors single
windows to centre, bipartites to side, all with segmental
heads, 1st floor cornices, 2nd floors, cill course.
Parapet, segmental-headed dormers, gable-end and central
wallhead stack. Simple rear 5-storey, 4-bay, ground floor
arched loading bay. 4th floor iron cantilevered balcony.
Some glazing altered. 4 dormers, central wallhead stack.
CENTRE BLOCK: 4-storey, 7-storey rear, 6-bays, detailing
similar to E block but with full attic storey above cornice
and blocking course. Left bay marked by pilaster strips,
ground floor segmental-arched entrance, upper floors
bipartite, 3rd floor consoled pilasters support sculptured
pediment. 2 wallhead stacks.
W BLOCK 4-storey and attic, 6-storey rear (Hutchinson,
1882). Tall ground floor loading doors. Corniced segmental
headed centre windows. Shallow canted oriels over outer
bays, 3-storey with similarly detailed dormers. Cornice,
parapet, central wallhead stack. 1 return bay to W. 4-bay
rear: tall arched loading doors, 1st floor altered.
Tripartites at 2nd and 4th bays of 2nd floor, 3-storey
canted oriels over. Canted dormers. Large octagonal cupola
with wrought-iron finial.
Slate roofs. Windows mainly sash and case, 4-pane glazing
pattern.
For J and J Gray, established 1855, joiners, cabinet-makers
and upholsterers, furniture removers and storers, funeral
directors.
