Description

Frank Thomson, 1908, with sculpture by Albert Hodge. Baroque concave-fronted library on corner site. Ashlar with brick-built blind 1st floor.

MONUMENTAL GABLES: to Strathmartine Road and Strathmore Avenue: single Doric-columned open pedimented and keyblocked window, sculpted open book over. Flanking engaged Ionic columns and channelled angle piers carry entablature and stepped block pediment.

CURVED CENTRE: has central twin engaged Doric-columned open pedimented entrance, scupltured cherubs in tympanum, swan-necked pedimented timber doorpiece. Engaged Doric colonnade with entablature to either side of entrance; windows with ashlar aprons between the columns. Blind brick 1st floor with string course, ashlar dentil cornice and blocking course. Piended and platformed slate roof. Central louvred ventilator with aedicules to each face and domed cap small-paned cross windows.

INTERIOR: circular lobby with Roman Ionic columns and dentil cornice. Wrought-iron stair balusters with barrel-vaulted ceiling.

Low boundary wall with wrought-iron railings.
