Description

William Alexander, 1896. 4-storey and attic, 8-bay, Renaissance-detailed commercial building. Cream sandstone ashlar, slated mansard roof. Modern shopfronts to ground floor with original dentilled cornice, cill course and drop-corbelled main cornice to 2nd floor, corniced and coped parapet broken by segmental dormers rising from wallhead; banded angle pilasters, paired to 3rd floor with ball-finial to left. Single and bipartite windows to 1st and 2nd floors, pilastered with consoled pediments alternately segmental and triangular to 1st, lugged and voluted architraves to 2nd, single windows to 3rd floor with lugged architraves, all originally with 2-pane timber sash and case frames, some now with modern glazing. Corniced ridge and wallhead stacks.

FRONT ELEVATION 2 shopfronts to ground floor, windows to 1st and 2nd floor arranged 2-1-1-2-2-1-1-2, 8 windows to 3rd floor, 8 dormers.

INTERIOR: not seen.

Statement of Interest

The design is similar to the adjoining 1, 3, 5 Murraygate/51-63 Commercial Street by Alexander Johnston (1877), itself conforming to the general character of William Mackison's Improvement Act designs, such as 73-99 Commercial Street.
