Jacobean 2-storey and basement red ashlar public library
ELEVATION TO ARTHURSTONE TERRACE: advanced gable to right
with 5-light mullioned and transomed shallow projection
through both floors, heavily consoled sculptured balcony
at 1st floor, balustraded parapet over 1st with obelisk
finials. Stepped gable with segmental diminutive pediment.
3 cross-window symmetrical section to left, slightly
advanced central bay, pilastered segmental arched
doorpiece under pedimented panel and obelisk finials.
Broken segmentally pedimented flanking windows. 1st floor
cornice becomes open segmental pediment over central
triangular pedimented window rising into stepped gablet with
obelisks.
ELEVATION TO MAITLAND STREET: symmetrical 5-window.
Alternate ground floor windows are cross with pattern
segmental pediments broken by obelisks. Centre 1st floor
window pedimented within open segmental pediment and
stepped gablet. Similar stepped gables to N and W
elevations, coursed rubble with plain window surrounds.
Windows single paned, mullioned and transomed.
Steep slate roofs with octagonal domed cupola, Ionic
details and arched louvred openings.
Wrought-iron railings. Cast-iron rainwater goods. INTERIOR:
tiled entrance and stair, wrought-iron balusters, pedimented
doorpieces. Fine timber roof, double collar beams linked
by arcade on mock hammer beams.
