John Hay 1807. Large rectangular walled garden with rubble-built external walls and ashlar copes. Cavity brick-built internal face. Large segmental arched openings.
N ELEVATION:"Pineapple House": projecting ashlar pavilion with arched openings, impost-level band course and main cornice, slate roof and pineapple finial. Lean-to worksheds with large gable openings, that to W somewhat altered, that to E 10-bay (6 windows and 4 doors) adjoining modern 2-storey house.
Gardeners house at NE angle 2-storey with overhanging eaves, brick-built gable to garden with ashlar dressings, cornices and vertically channelled stacks. Windows sash and case.
Internal arrangement of terracing and comparments removed to form zoo. Unusual form of cast-iron framed greenhouses, replaced by standard aluminium circa 1980.
There was originally a complex watering system, compartments enclosed by high brick walls and a raised walk ending in 2 brick pillars, built with gaps in the brickwork.
