Description

Edward Tough (Hutton and Tough), 1909. Symmetrical 2-storey semi-detached villas. Haried brick and expanded metal lath with timber turrets and verandahs on rock-faced ruble-built base.

Inner gabled bays triple light. Octagonal angle towers, 5 timber mullioned lights. Swept roofs with art nouveau finials. Linking 4-bay timber verandahs with recessed doors at ground floor.

Side elevations: large stair windows, some with painted glass. Projecting 5-light mullioned and transomed bays set back to rear.

Slate roofs with tiled ridges. Ridge stacks. Windows originally had single-pane lower cases, 4 and 6-pane upper cases (altered to 2-light at no 28, triple-light bay). Unusual glazing pattern to stair windows. Rubble-built retaining walls, with some original mild steel railings and gates.

Statement of Interest

An unusual development of American-looking houses, each pair being slightly different in its treatment of the verandah.
