T Duncan Rhind. Dated 1903. American shingle style house with
3-bay extension to W 1952. 2-storey and attic with basement
to W. Eaves sweeping over 1st floor at intervals.
Asymmetrical, composition and plan. Snecked, squared and
coursed sandstone rubble. Small-pane glazing altered in
places. Westmoreland slated roof; deeply coped rubble stacks.
Complex elevations with stacks from slopes.
S ENTRANCE FRONT: 2-storey porch with door to E side. Triple
window at ground, oriel over and applied timber framing in
gable. Similar detail in adjoining dormer. Wide gabled bay
to W. Verandah/loggia at E returning from E elevation and to
N.
N FRONT: main roof swept over semi-circular window on
off-centre gable, flanked by eyelid dormers. Balcony with
cast-iron railings and steps approaching from W, over canted
window bay at ground floor; door onto balcony in recessed
gable.
INTERIOR: porch with painted strip-panelling. Timber beamed
ceiling and recessed fireplace in former drawing room.
Decorative window latches. White panelled doors, brass
handles, in extension.
Ashlar sandstone gate piers and rubble wall.
Style and composition refer to H H Richardson's American
vernacular, R N Shaw's variety of materials and to Arts and
Crafts expression. The house is now divided into 3; some
minimal disfiguring alterations, but mostly sympathetic.
Interior doors to extension brought from Thurston House,
Innerwick, when demolished 1952, and probably designed by
John Kinross. Commissioned by Mrs Emily Violet Croall, nee
Hutchison of Edinburgh. Sited by promenade and bathing pool.
The eyelid dormers have nautical reference to the hats of
Nelson and Napoleon.
