J A W Grant, Edinburgh. 1939. Symmetrical crescent of 3
linked blocks comprising 10, 2-storey council houses of Arts
and Crafts style. 9 of 3 apartments, one of 4. Harled.
12-pane glazing pattern. Steeply pitched slate roofs, swept
at eaves. Harled ridge stacks. Original doors retained with
small upper panels.
MAIN TERRACE S FRONT: 9 recessed bays with central arched,
voussoired pend. Tripartites in ground floor flanking paired
doors. Gabled dormer heads to 1st floor, breaking eaves with
small 4-pane lights under eaves, above door. Advanced gabled
ends each with 2 ground floor and single 1st floor windows.
Simple rear elevation with continuous roof. 1st floor windows
breaking eaves under swept roofs.
PAVILIONS: linked to curved terrace by mutual single storey
porches and covered pend. L-plan, with 3-bays to the green.
Similar detailing. Outer gables with asymmetrical openings.
Unusual and late essay in crescent form. Sited E of Bleaching
Field and former Seafield Brickworks, from which its name
derived.
