Description

Early-earlier 19th century. Single storey, 3-bay cottage, with adjoining one-and-a-half storey outbuilding. Harled. Pantiles. Slightly raised and painted margins to cottage; painted base course to W elevation.

COTTAGE:

W (LOTHIAN STEET) ELEVATION: door with 4-pane strip fanlight at centre. Window to outer bays.

S (LONDON ROAD) ELEVATION: window to right.

E ELEVATION: modern flat-roofed shed to right. Taller outbuilding adjoined to left.

N ELEVATION: adjoined to No 2B Lothian Street (see separate listing).

4-pane glazing pattern in sash and case windows; replacement glazing in window on S elevation. Coped skews to S. Gablehead stack to S, mutual harled flue to N, off-set on S gable of neighbouring building, No 2B Lothian Street.

OUTBUILDING: Former dairy. Gabled W elevation adjoined to E elevation of cottage to left. S (London Road) elevation continuous with S elevation of lower cottage; loft window to left under eaves; low, painted brick screen wall adjoined to right. N elevation blank, with low wall running N adjoined to left. E elevation gabled; boarded door to left; modern lean-to to right with door on N and window to E. Raised skews to E.

Statement of Interest

These buildings were built before 1835. The cottage and outbuilding are prominently sited on a corssroads, and form a pleasing vernacular composition.
