Earlier-mid 19th century. 2-storey, 3-bay villa. Ashlar E elevation, remaining elevations squared and snecked rubble. Base course. Cill course at 1st floor on E elevaion; raised margins.
E (ESKBANK ROAD, PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION:
Semicircular-arched doorpiece at centre, with plate glass fanlight, panelled door and flanking moulded panels. Regular fenestration to ground and 1st floors.
S (AVENUE ROAD) ELEVATION: window at ground and 1st floors to left. Window at 1st floor and small diamond-paned window at ground to right.
W ELEVATION: piended bay advanced to left; window to left at 1st floor. Door and window at 1st floor to S return. Blind window at 1st floor in right bay. Later block, with slate-hung platform roof and window to right on wedge-shaped gable, adjoining to right of advanced block.
N ELEVATION: window to left at ground and 1st flors. Largely 8-pane glazing pattern in sash and case windows. Piend and platform roof with deep eaves. Individual corniced and chamfered, rendered and lined wallhead stacks; group of 4 at centre behind eaves to S, group of 3 at centre behind eaves to N. Truncated wallhead stack behind eaves to left on advanced block. Grey slates. Original cans.
BOUNDARY WALLS AND GATEPIERS: semicircular coped squared and sneckedrubble retaining wall. 2 chamfered and corniced pyramidal-capped gatepiers, with "Strathesk" inscribed on left pier, and corniced overthrow to pedestrian gate on Avenue Road. 2 coal hatches to left on Avenue Road wall.
B Group with Nos 40, 42, 44, 46 and 48 Eskbank Road, and No 1 Avenue Road. The principal elevation of this building faces onto Eskbank Road. This villa was built sometime between 1835 and 1852. A much-altered former stable block is adjoined to the S of the later wing at rear.
