Tolbooth Tower 16th century, upper stages and slated bellhouse 1776: squat, square, coursed rubble. Town Hall 1814, replacing town house of 1602 (sculptured panel inset) 2-storey (tall 1st) coursed rubble with margins, older work incorporated on N side, 1754 lintel. New doorpiece, internal alterations John Currie (Elie) 1886.
The Council Minutes give little information but John Corstophine was probably responsible for the 1814 work. The reference of 1776 is as follows: 'The Council appoint the two Baillies Sauchope, George Hall, Wm Brown, Treasurer, James Laurie, Baillie Gilles a committee to meet in Baillie Jamieson's this night at six o'clock to
receive estimates of the expense of repairing the Town's Spire either by Wright or Mason Work. The Estimates to be given in by Baillie Dudingston, Convener Brown and John Murray Wright and John Bower mason and to judge which may be the most beneficial manner of repairing the same and to employ tradesmen accordingly! There is no indication of how
the matter was resolved.
