James Reid, 'squarewright', 1796. Plain 3-storey and dormerless
attic, regular 5-bay frontage; ashlar, rusticated at ground floor,
polished ashlar dressings, harled return gables and rear.
Double-leaf panelled door to centre entrance; 12-pane glazing in
timber sash and case windows. Rusticated quoins; deep moulded eaves cornice.
Moulded cornices to end and rear stacks; gabled platform slate
roof to front block, plain gable at rear.
INTERIOR: wide cantilevered stone staircase with moulded underside; plain handrail and plain iron balusters. Simple plaster cornice in former lst floor former drawing room; some 6-panel raised and fielded doors survive.
When built the Town House accommodated 'a hall, large drawing room, Town-council chamber, sheriff clerks' offices and prison. The staircase and landings are spacious.' The building now serves as offices and larger rooms are all subdivided. Town House fronted by renewed paved 'plainstones' with renewed mercat cross.
