Description

Dated 1805. 2-storey, 3-bay house with advanced centre bay forming T-plan. Harled, painted tooled ashlar margins. Entrance in E return gable of advance wing, lit at N (Clunie Street elevation) by centre ground and 1st floor windows with late 19th century coloured margined glazing; ball-finialled apex bellcote crowns advanced gabled bay. Modern plate glass glazing; margined end stacks; slate roof. Low coped front wall with re-set datestone.

Statement of Interest

An early pre-1872 Education Act town school surviving largely externally intact. Datestone in front wall separating house from pavement is inscribed 'FREE SCHOOL Endowed by Alexander Pirie, 1805'. The school was established in 1804 with a bequest of £1,200, 'for free education of boys, to number of 80, in reading, writing, arithmetic, navigation, and the Latin language, with church music, with £40 per annum of salary, a free-house and garden'.
