Market (or mercat) crosses are stone monuments that were erected to symbolise that a settlement had the right to hold markets. It would serve as the focal point of the settlement and as well as markets, other events took place at these monuments, such as the public proclamation (announcement) of news such as the birth of a new member of the royal family or the results of an election. It was also the place where criminals were punished.
Many market crosses have been moved. This market cross stood near Cobbleheugh (now the site of Banchory Lodge Hotel). A weekly Fair was held there and on the 12th of June each year a public holiday marked a Special Fair dedicated to Saint Ternan. The cross was relocated to Silverbank (near the Banchory Woollen Mill) and then to Burnett Park. It was moved to the south of Banchory Ternan East Church in 1975.
Statutory address and listed building record revised in 2017. Previously listed as 'Market Cross, Burnett Park'.
