Description

Early 19th century; later alterations. 2-storey and basement, 3-bay classical house on corner site. Painted harl; painted ashlar dressings. Band courses at basement, ground and 1st floor; 1st floor cill course; eaves course; modillion cornice; blocking course; strip margins.

N (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: central platt oversailing basement; corniced, block-pedimented double columnar doorpiece; 2-leaf timber door; flanking glass panels; single window aligned above at 1st floor; Regular fenestration to flanking bays at basement, ground and 1st floors; architraved arches at ground floor; consoled, corniced tripartite windows to outer bays at 1st floor.

E (SIDE) ELEVATION: regular fenestration to basement, ground and 1st floors (central bay bipartite; 1st floor blind); consoled cornice to central ground floor window; cornice to central 1st floor window.

Plate glass and 4-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof; coped and corniced stacks; circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

B Group with Nos 1-12 (Inclusive), 16-27 (Inclusive), Sheriff Court (No 14), County Buildings, Monuments to James George Smith Neill, Earl of Eglinton and Wintoun, Sir James Fergusson of Kilkerran, War Memorial, and Gatepiers, Gates and Boundary Walls The palace-fronted square as proposed by John Robertson in 1799 was not pursued, instead individual feuars were allowed to develop the square. Eaves course, cornice and blocking course higher than adjacent No 24 (see separate list description).
