Early 19th century. 3-storey and attic, 3-bay classical tenement with shallow dentilled pediment; later shops to ground. Ashlar. Cill courses, blocking course. Raised, moulded architraves to upper storey window openings; corniced at 1st storey and pedimented at centre. 6-panelled timber entrance door to far left with fanlight over leads to flat above. Pair of piended and canted dormers.
Predominantly plate-glass timber sash and case windows to upper storeys, plate glass to ground. Grey slate, corniced stack to N gable, brick to S.
This is a good example of an early 19th century classical tenement situated on a main road in Arbroath. The classical detailing adds interest to the street elevation and the building is a significant addition to the streetscape of this area of Arbroath.
The classical style was often used in buildings of the early 19th century as it was thought to convey a sense of dignity. Arbroath was developing at this time and the style would have been seen to be fitting for a building on the main street.
