Description

R Smith of Glasgow, architect. Dated 1875. 2-storey Town
house with prominent 4-stage tower central on main (E)
elevation. Scots Baronial detailing with bartizans,
roll-moulding, crow-stepped gables. Red ashlar.
Cable-moulded round-arched wide doorway in tower, balustraded
balcony above and empty base and canopy for sculpture;
corbelled conical-roofed bartizans, louvred openings in top
stage, clock to each face of 1st stage of slated and leaded
spire. 2 bays either side of tower with cross-windows.
Horizontal string courses; louvred dormer-shaped ventilators;
corniced end stacks; slate roof. Large 1st floor window with
hoodmould and Jacobean detailed head - S gable; 3-bay rear
wing extends to W. Modern addition to N gable. Free-standing
lamps flank doorway, cast-iron brackets on ashlar bases.
INTERIOR: modern alterations; hall at 1st floor runs full
length of building.

Statement of Interest

The "Bruce Stone" which was removed from Annan in the

1920's/30's has been returned and is set in the hall E wall

(for description see RCAHM INVENTORY, 1920, No 4).
