GATES, GATEPIERS, BOUNDARY WALLS, LETTER BOX AND RAILINGS: square-plan granite gatepiers with pyramidal caps to N, 2-leaf decorative iron gate; low granite walls flanking to left and right, stepped-up and adjoining terrace, surmounted by iron railings. Brick coped rubble garden walls to S incorporating brick outbuildings. Victorian wall letter box Type "C" set in wall to SW.
1-6 Marine Place is a terrace of what Brogden calls the "Aberdeen Cottage", developed from the Butt and Ben by the 1820's. They usually have 2 main rooms on the ground floor, a smaller room tucked behind and further accommodation in the attic, lit by canted dormers. In some of the grander examples, such as Simpson's nearby Marine Terrace (see separate listing) there is a full sunken basement. Marine Place is particularly complete as it retains it's boundary walls enclosing a large triangle of garden and sweeping driveway. The loss of some of the lying-pane glazing is unfortunate. Also of particular note are the rear elevations which survive virtually unaltered.
