Statement of Interest

These engineering works form the skeleton round which the

present city centre has evolved. They are bold and

imaginative examples of town planning in early times and of

considerable historic interest on this account and by reason

of the extensive use of the modern flyover principle; that

at Marischal Street is of especial importance anticipating

Edinburgh South Bridge by nineteen years.

Within Aberdeen Art Gallery unexecuted plans for Union Bridge

by Sir John Rennie, David Hamilton of Glasgow and James Young

of London (1800) Telford had proposed 150' span (drawing

dated 3rd February 1802)

Line of street suggested by Abercrombie in report of 30th

April 1796.

Carried out under Act of Parliament of 1800.
