Description

Mansion built c. 1800 on site of The Bu. 3 storeys; 3
bays wide with porch. Harled; dressed corner stones and
chimneys. Slated roof. Interior has fine winding stair with
solid newel. Several out-buildings (one with heraldic panel
dated 1649) and well.

Statement of Interest

The Bu, chief seat of Stewarts of Burray, was one of

greatest mansions in Orkney (For inventories see P.O.A.S.

XII) Archibald Stewart acquired Burray in later 16th cent.

Barbara Stewart of Burray married William Stewart of Mains

(Galloway) in 17th cent. Sir Archibald Stewart, 3rd Bt.,

died in Marshalsea Prison 1746 and estates passed to his

kinsman, 6th Earl of Galloway.
